Why Do Cysts and Tumors Form in the Mouth and Jaw?

Cysts and tumors in the mouth and jaw can develop for a variety of reasons, many of which are closely linked to dental health and how teeth grow and erupt. These growths are often the body’s response to chronic irritation, infection, or developmental issues.

For example, a dental cyst may form at the tip of a tooth root due to a long-standing infection that wasn’t treated in time. This type of cyst is usually filled with fluid and can slowly expand, affecting nearby bone and tissue. Another common cause is an unerupted or impacted wisdom tooth—when the tooth fails to break through the gum properly, a cyst may develop around it.
In some cases, tumors or cysts may arise from the tissues that form teeth, such as the dental follicle or periodontal ligament. While many of these growths are benign, they can still cause discomfort, swelling, or damage to surrounding structures if left untreated.
Early diagnosis through dental imaging and regular checkups is key to managing these conditions effectively and preserving oral health.

Understanding Cysts and Tumors in Dental Care

Finding a new lump or growth in your mouth or jaw can be concerning. At our dental clinic, we want to help you understand the difference between two common types of growths: cysts and tumors.

Cysts

  • A cyst is like a small, fluid-filled sac that can form in your jawbone or the soft tissues of your mouth. These are almost always non-cancerous (benign) and often develop from an infection or as a result of tooth development

Tumors

  • A tumor is a solid mass of tissue. Unlike cysts, a tumor can be either benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). While most oral tumors are not harmful, it's essential to have every growth checked by a professional

How We Diagnose and Treat These Conditions

At Saphire Dent clinic, we use a careful and precise approach to diagnose and treat any growth you may have.

Diagnosis

First, our dentists will perform a thorough examination. We may use modern imaging, such as X-rays or a CT scan, to get a clear picture of the growth. The only way to know for sure what a growth is through a biopsy, where a small sample of tissue is taken and analyzed.

Removal

The treatment plan depends on what we find

  • For Cysts:We typically perform a minor surgical procedure to completely remove the cyst and its sac. This is a common part of our dental care clinic services and is designed to prevent the cyst from returning.
  • For Tumors:Benign tumors are usually removed with a straightforward surgery. If a tumor is found to be cancerous, we will work with you to create a comprehensive treatment plan, which may involve more extensive surgery and collaboration with other medical specialists
